FIFTH TASK

The stereotype is an over-generalized belief about a culture, people, sex, race, age, sexual orientation, religion. Furthermore, it bases on physical and psychological characteristics and also behavior. For these reasons, stereotyping leads to a great deal of inaccuracy in social perception. It encourages prejudice. Due to the fact that stereotype is a product of culture. 

However, mass media has a strong influence in supporting and tearing down stereotypical characteristics. For example, in spite of Colombia is a beautiful country, full of biodiversity, history, and culture, also it has been declared “the happiest country in the world”. Our country suffers from a great deal of negative stereotyping and many people associate it with drug trafficking, poverty, corruption, violence, etc.

Now, I am going to tell you about the videos. In these videos, we can know some stereotypes about Colombians. For instance, in the statement “Latin men are machista (sexist)”, a Colombian girl affirms “NO” and she says, it is a myth, because in her family, men cook and women work, so they have their careers as well. The other statement is “Latin men and women are jealous and possessive” and her answer is "truth". To be specific, other people say, women are crazy, very jealous and possessive, also women make up unreal stories.

The following statement is “Latinos are lazy”, in this supposition all Latinos say ¡No! because You do not grow up in Latin America expecting things to be given like to you. Latinos are proud to be hard working people. For these reasons, it is a myth. The upcoming statement is “latin men = latin lovers: sexy, charming and suave” and Colombian girl “Paula” says Colombian men are gentlemen and romantic like they are the bringing you flowers. In conclusion, in these examples you find excellent stereotypes or not a lot, the idea is you can verify if the stereotypes are true or not.
